Survival Skills for Modern Life

Adulting 101

Welcome to Adulthood. I’ll be your guide to help you learn survival skills that will help you navigate all of the delightful surprises that come with living on your own for the first time.

If you’re staring at your dorm or new apartment, wondering exactly what on Earth you are doing, I’m here to help. Although I’m not a licensed expert, I juggle a home and family and have been winging it for a really long time. And for the stuff I don’t know off hand, I’m a huge nerd who likes to do research.

We’re All Winging It

Wanna hear a secret? I always thought my parents had it together when I was a kid. I was in my forties when I realized they’re faking it until they make it as much as I am. Your friends who might seem to have everything figured out may be struggling too. I was once standing in your shoes. I suddenly had all of these adult responsibilities and only a vague idea of where to start.

Everyone is learning all the time, so if there’s a skill you haven’t quite mastered, don’t fret. We’ve all got something we will be clueless about at first.

Perfection is the Enemy of Good – Voltaire (probably)

When Pinterest first launched, I was completely enamored by all of the perfect, shiny, happy pins featuring perfect, shiny, happy homes. But I have a family and a full-time job. My house sometimes looks like it was robbed, and it’s…okay. Having a spotless home 24/7 is not sustainable unless you’re wealthy and have staff. Sometimes your home will be Instagram-worthy, but life has a habit of getting in the way, and you just recover when you can.

The purpose of this blog is not to have an immaculate home and perfect life; it will be about real-life solutions to real-life situations. We’re not aiming for perfection; we’re aiming for reality.

If I mention a specific product, it’s because I use and love it and want to share it with all of you.

Survival Skills We’ll Cover

Let’s face it. Cleaning isn’t glamorous. Some of you may find it therapeutic, but most of you will find it to be a necessary evil. And that’s okay. Few of us come home after work or school and get really excited about doing dishes or taking out the trash. While this probably won’t be the best time you’ve ever had, the reward is a tidy space and a shower that doesn’t tell you you’re sounding a little pitchy.

We’ll focus mainly on how to tackle the mess, but I’ll touch on other life skills you’ll need along the way.

Why Should I Care?

When you have a tidy space, you can spend more time on things you really enjoy. Who wants to spend their weekend cleaning? Getting into the habit of cleaning as you go makes main chores go faster, so you have more time for you and what you love. It can be a game-changer for your mental load, too. That pile of laundry isn’t just taking over your couch; it’s taking up mental space, too.

Ready to Get Started? Let’s Do This.

I don’t expect this blog to make you love cleaning. Though, some of you may find a good cleaning is great for when you’re all wound up about something and need a productive way to release all that energy. So crank up your favorite playlist, podcast, or show, and let’s get into it.
